Glendale High School Cardinals 5A Union. One of the oldest
schools in the state. It has a great sports
history featuring many great coaches. Bob
Crouch, Al Munoz, Tom Dingman, Mike Carl, Mark
Smith just to name a few.
That was then, this is now. The recent football
success of the Cardinals is not the stuff
legends are made of. They have struggled,
changed regions, sections, conferences to no
avail.
Rob York now in his second year as HC is well
aware of the what needs to be done. I met him
for the first time on 8/17/17 when the Cardinals
hosted a preseason scrimmage against the 6A
Copper Canyon Aztecs.
In 2017 the Cards enter the season one deep at
every position. Many will be playing both ways.
They were outnumbered and outsized. In a
scrimmage coaches play their first, second team
players in stages. Mixing in the JV players as
well, if they have them.
This night was, complicated. The Cards offense
struggled but held their own on their initial
series. The defense spent a lot of time
adjusting on their first. Then the different
units took turns rotating into play. At the end
both teams brought their first teams out again.
Glendale did well and showed a lot of poise and
focus. Their second unit regrouped as well. In
the past the evening may have had different
ending. Tonight, the Cardinals showed that they
believe in each other and their coaches. Many
good things were accomplished.
Afterwards I spoke with coach York. We talked
about his guys, the quarterback situation and
his staff. He gives them all the credit. After
witnessing the scrimmage, he is right, they all
did an amazing job keeping this very young team
on track. Make no mistake, Rob York could easily
become one of the coaches that Glendale faithful
will remember for a long, long time.
Enjoy the interview, get to know some coaches
and players. Be sure to attend some games in one
of the most amazing cities in Arizona. I will
have more pictures and interviews soon. Check
