Shawn Kemmer is the head football coach for the
Copper Canyon Aztecs of the Tolleson Union High
School District. The team plays in a tough 6A
Southwest Conference. Last season was a learning
year. They learned they wanted to have a
different result in 2017. They had a difficult
2016 campaign in which the team went 3-7 and 0-5
in league.
I attended their
scrimmage on 8/17/18 at Glendale high school,
home of the Cardinals. The Aztecs rolled in on
two busses and had both the varsity and JV
squads on the field. They have a lot to get done
and time is precious. It went well for the
offense and the defense.
The Aztecs QB Chase
Pope is a Junior, he started in 2016, did well
and looked good on this night. Coach talked
about him in the interview. We will spend more
time on the players in another interview.
A little about Shawn
Kemmer. He teaches. Served the USA as an
Airborne Ranger. Taught and coached at Buckeye.
Studied Business Psychology at University of
Phoenix. He is from Hampton, Virginia where he
attended Hampton High School. Currently he lives
in Buckeye, Arizona.
When he is not
teaching pyschology & sociology or coaching he is spending his spare
time working at getting his students, boys and
girls involved in learning and serving others.
Football is a year around sport, has been for a
long time. So he and his teams are involved in
passing leagues, OTA's, camps, clinics and more.
This summer the squad went to football camp in
Flagstaff.
He and the team work weekly with the Glendale
Feeding Hope Foodbank.
He is involved with FCA Fellowship of Christian
Athletes. He has one of the largest groups that
attend the FCA events each year.
On his staff their are two coaches that walked
away from six figure incomes and moved over a
thousand miles because they believe in what is
going on at CC with this team.
He takes every
opportunity to promote, exhort, challenge and
present his students to the community. He has
high standards for them. No surprise to anyone
that they meet and exceed them in academics and
athletics. When the kids work with Shawn, his
coaches and the rest of the teachers and
administrators everyone wins. They get better,
get noticed and have opportunities that are a
direct result of their participation at Copper
Canyon.
Things that matter to
him, faith, family, education. Football, for a
high school student is another part of the
education mix. A chance to apply what they are
learning in the classroom on the field. Study
preparation, collaboration. They become a family
here, learn that faith, trust, effort helps them
grow as individuals and to become a stronger
team.
Listen to the
interview, find out about the team and attend
some of the games to see for yourself how
amazing the students at the Canyon are. We will
have more interviews with coaches and players
during the 2017 season. Check back.
