Westview High School Knights 2004 Football, Soccer, Track
Jared's favorite sport while in high school was football. He played all four years and was a starter on the Varsity for his sophomore through senior season. He was named to the All Region teams all three years. As a junior he was also named the All Region team as a punter. His sophomore season he was name to the West Valley View Newspaper "Dream Team".
As a sophomore he played corner and kicker, as a junior corner, kicker and some receiver then his senior year he played nearly every snap of every game as a corner, receiver and kicker. His senior year the Knights hired Coach Bowen to head the football team. The coach for his sophomore and junior season made a huge impact on him and challenged him to reach for greatness. That would be George Martinez a coach that brought his NFL experience to the high school ranks. He ran an NFL style offense that helped many Westview players achieve great recognition in the game. It should be no surprise then that Coach Martinez found his way back into the NFL coaching with the Oakland Raiders.
Jared was laughing about how hard Coach Martinez could be on him, but made sure to let us know that Coach always encourage him as well. Jared said: "Coach always had a good speech after each practice and at each game, it made you want to play well for him and the team."
He also spoke of his kicking coach, Orlando Gordoa and how he helped him improve his punting and kicking. But he and Coach Gordoa shared one of Jared's main passions. Music, Jared was given an academic scholarship to GCC which he used to get certified in Audio Production. A skill he is using to open his own music/recording studio. He has been in several bands and plays the guitar. While he was in the bands he wrote many of the songs the bands performed. He prefers the "Alternative" genre of music.
Speed is something Jared has plenty of, even though his first love is football, he did very well in track. He qualified for the state meet in the hurdles his sophomore/junior seasons. He also represented the state of Arizona in the Great Southwest Track Meet finishing 7th in the Decathlon. He was the Knights anchor on the 4 X 100 relay as well.
Not only did he love to run, kick and hit people as cornerback. He got a kick out playing soccer at Westview as well. The Knights even made it to the state semifinals one season, but Jared did not play soccer his senior season.
We mentioned he went to GCC and finished one course of study. We want to let you know that was not the end but the beginning of his academic efforts, he is still a full time student and is working on getting his prerequisites out of the way so he can continue on and go into the medical field. Thank his mom for that, she works in the field.
Speed, we did mention that earlier as well. It also comes to him naturally. His dad owns a carburetor business and his company sponsors race cars. Very fast race cars, of course. So mom and dad got their props but he wants me to be sure and say how much a couple of other people mean to him.
First, to his fiancee, Jessica, well you know.
Then to a track coach at GCC, Coach Ray Davis. Thanks for the inspiration.
As if Jared does not have enough to do with college, his fiancee, music and the Stampede. He also loves golf. In fact he took a golf class with Joe Kersting while at GCC.
His favorite college football team is located in the area his parents hail from, the Michigan Wolverines. His favorite pro team is the Cardinals. No really, I asked him twice, then once again to be sure, he likes the Cardinals.
Jared would love to play Arena Football for a team like the Rattlers after puts in a couple of years for a college team, which he working on now. Don't be surprised if you see him this fall playing college football, studying medicine, producing music and of course, playing golf. He can always sleep when he gets older.
For now however he is one of the most dependable receivers in the AzFL and the Stampede is playing well. The team is owned and coached by two former Westview stars in QB Gene Garcia and RB Craig Brown. It is a talented team with plenty of speed on defense and at every skill position. The Stampede represent the communities of Goodyear, Avondale, Litchfield Park and Buckeye.
I mentioned the Rattlers earlier. Jared does remind us of a former Rattler player that fought his way into the AFL, that would be Chris Horn. Yep, Jared has many of the skills that Chris did and they are very similar in many ways. With any luck and continued hard work, soon you may be flipping channels and hear the announcer for the Rattlers say: "Touchdown Schmiege!" The only problem I can see here is what song or sound do you play when he scores. For Chris it was easy, for Hunkie Cooper it was easy. But Jared, you gotta get a nickname if you want to play on that stage!
