National Champions from the WSFL Past
and Present: Coming soon, the teams, stories and Champions.
Valley of Sun Bowl - game will be hosted by
the school with the best record among the valley teams, MCC, SCC,
GCC and PC. Glendale was the front runner having beaten
both Mesa and Scottsdale, they did lose to Phoenix and the Bears
beat Mesa and must still play Scottsdale. SCC can get in the hunt with wins
and a GCC loss. Phoenix needs to beat SCC to secure the
bowl game at Hoy Field.
The VSB Champ in 2007 was Mesa they beat Fort Scott KS
47-31. Since 1988 Glendale has been in 14 VSB games winning nine
of them. In that time period Mesa has played in four winning
three while SCC has been in two losing both. Phoenix made it's
last appearance in the VSB in 1986. They were in four from '83
to '86 and won three in a row in '84, '85 and '86 but the Bears
post season dreams have been in hibernation ever since. Could
this be their year? Prior to that the big dog on the
championship scene was Arizona Western under now retired Coach
Ray Butcher.

The WSFL is now officially Championed by #2 Snow as they pick up
their 10th straight win by squeaking by Phoenix this week. The
Bears drop to #8 but will host the VSB and are ACCAC champs.
Their bowl game will feature a prominent team to be sure. For
the second time this season Glendale moved up without winning or
playing, they are now at #9. Give some of that mojo to EAC, oh,
never mind, they used some of their own to drop NMMI and move up
to #16 and a win this week over AWC in Yuma can boost them into
a possible bowl game as well.SATURDAY, NOVEMBER 8
*Snow 19 at Phoenix 12, 1:30pm
*Eastern AZ 27 at NMMI 19, 1pm
*AZ Western 39 at Pima 0, 1pm
*Scottsdale 35 at Mesa 52, 7pm
OK, the polls are in and yes Snow is STILL #2
but PC, Phoenix College, DA BEARS are up to #6. This Saturday at
Hoy Field in Phoenix Snow and PC face off to see who will own
the WSFL this season. They played a non conference game earlier
in the year which Snow won. But this is not the same Bears team
from that day. Man I love this game. Glendale and Eastern are
still both highly ranked with the Gauchos at #11 and the
Monsters at #18. EAC travels to NMMI for a home coming of sorts
for coach O'Meara while Western goes to Tucson and faces the
Aztecs. In another big matchup in the ACCAC Scottsdale goes to
arch rival Mesa. Some great games on tap with recruiting rights
in the balance.

Time Out. Snow Intercepts EAC. FINAL
Wow, everyone that was ranked last week moved up in the
polls! Even the Gauchos??? Hey, it's all good. How 'Bout
them BEARS.... in the top 10 in America
at #9 is Phoenix College. Wow, history is being
made by the Gold and Blue and HC Land Jacobsen. Now all he has
to do is travel to Scottsdale to play the Artichokes, a program
he coached just a bit ago. Can you say "trap game". Well Coach
can't and he believes his men will be ready in spite of all
their Amazing Performances this season, he predicts there will
be no letdown on his squad. I believe him. PC has got to win it
tho to get it outright. A loss puts GCC back in the mix...
The SCC squad, well, knocking the Bears out of their tree is
just about a big enuf goal to pump them up for an upset. This
will be one of the biggest games in Arizona between AZ JUCO's in
a long time. Anyone remember the great games between David Rice
and his run 'n gun Thunderbirds vs the tough Gauchos, those
games were almost always THE game of the season and nearly
always determined the Valley of the Sun host.
This is our GAME of the WEEK. In fact, it
will be our TOP pick for a college game by any of our state's
teams. A win gives them the VSB, the ACCAC title and the right
to challenge Snow for a top National rank and a shot at a
National Championship. I am getting anxious just writing about
it. I cannot imagine how the team at PC is handling it.
Not to be forgotten is the Snow vs EAC game or the Glendale
at Mesa game. There is a chance that this season we could see 3
or 4 of the WSFL teams extended bowl game invitations...
And what about the job Coach Lynn and his staff have done with
the NMMI Broncos this year. Some of the best football in America
is being played right here in the WSFL.

Snow BYE
Snow currently has a firm grip on the WSFL title and a bye
week to prepare for a trip to EAC next week. Not a game that
Snow is taking for granted and be sure if EAC beats Scottsdale
this Saturday, then it will become a huge event game for the
Monsters. But first they have to handle SCC. Pima continues to
struggle and it does not get any easier this week since they
have to travel to #14 Glendale to take a bunch of angry Gauchos.
Why are they angry? I am glad you asked. For most of the last
two decades GCC has used Phoenix College as a home game, it
mattered not if it was played at Glendale or Phoenix, the
Gauchos would toy with then dismiss the Bears. Losses in close
games are like birthdays, eventually, they get old.
This past week the Bears hosted the Gauchos and by the time
the game was over being proud of being PC was well, PC
again....... The Bears used the mojo of former Phoenix
Championship era players and coaches to shake down the thunder
and send the then #9 Gauchos back to their West Valley home to
lick the wounds that only an angry Bear could inflict. It is now
up to Phoenix to step up and finish strong. This week they take
their #12 national ranking to Yuma to play a very dangerous
Matador team that would love to declaw the Blue and Gold.
After that they and if they win at AWC they travel to
Scottsdale for a game that will be, with a PC victory the right
to host the Valley of the Sun Bowl. It would also give them the
ACCAC 2008 Championship. Their last game the following week will
be just as important because it will be against Snow and could
have a great influence on the VSB game foe and put Phoenix into
position to play for a National Title.... No pressure here. A
loss at SCC in two weeks could put GCC back in the VSB game.
The most exciting finish of the night had to be the game at
EAC. After turnovers scuttled the Monsters the week before. The
Monsters were wondering if lady luck hated them. EAC had a lead
and only had to control the ball, run out the clock and take a
win vs. Mesa. But they could only watch in disbelief as they
appeared once again to pull defeat out of he jaws of victory
when on their final drive Mesa recovered a fumble. Then the
Thunderbirds scored to take the lead and looked like they were
in control. The Monsters found a way, to borrow a phrase from
the T-Birds, to both score again and then use their defense to
secure the much needed win. JUCO football, check it
out....

Season in the balance this weekend! The
Phoenix College Bears are on the brink of their biggest success
in nearly 20 years. The ASPN Radio Game of the Week is the
Glendale Gauchos at the PC Bears Hoy Field. At stake in this
game are BOTH the rights to host the Valley of the Sun Bowl and
front running position for the ACCAC Championship Title. Expect
Phoenix to move up in the polls a few spots closer to Glendale.
Snow has all but locked up the WSFL title and if they continue
winning will probably get to host a National Championship in a
brand new venue.
