Four forced turnovers helped the Yavapai Bandits to a 14-3 defeat
of the 50-man deep Paradise Valley Crusaders in the Bandits' home
football opener Saturday.
"Anytime we can force two fumbles and two interceptions, that's a great
day," said Bandits' head coach Kurt Dembaugh. "We have only 29 players,
so it helps us out tremendously."
Coming back for his first game after healing from severe ankle
injuries in pre-season, Anthony Guzman earned offensive player of the
game by scoring both Bandits' touchdowns.
Nick Bradford, switching from offense as a former Bradshaw Mountain High
Bear to defensive wide receiver for the Bandits, grabbed both
interceptions to gain defensive player of the game status.
The Bandits scored in the first quarter, while the Crusaders kicked a
field goal to make it 7-3 at the half of the Arizona Football League
rivalry.
Dembaugh described the contest as a "pretty good defensive struggle back
and forth," but he also was pleased with his offense.
Guzman and Jacob Dembaugh were good for moving the ball down the field
quickly, while Chris Cordero and Tony Gray "powered" the ball on their
carries. Micah White kicked both extra points.
Alex Bruhn suffered the only temporary casualty of the game, with a
dislocated kneecap. He will sit out for a few weeks.
