Week 14: Stampede 7 Cowboys 20
Championship Game
The Stampede made it the AZFL Championship in only their second year and inexperience would be their downfall, as they lose to the Chandler Cowboys, 20-7.
Plain and simply put, we were out-coached and we were out-played. The Cowboys came ready and played good football for four quarters and capitalized on all of our mistakes. You can’t say much about the fact that we lost fair and square. Sure, there are “What if’s?” but that doesn’t change the end result.
I remember the feeling after we lost. After a brutal 13 week journey to get to that point, it was over now. I couldn’t see tomorrow, or next season. I’ve played football since the fifth grade and I’m now in my late twenty’s and I’ve enjoyed every moment of it; every moment, except the moment that I was trapped in on Saturday night. It was the agony of defeat that saturated my heart and put a knot in my stomach. After all of that work, we would lose the “big game.” I’m sure I wasn’t the only one feeling that after the final buzzer sounded.
In situations like that, it’s hard to be optimistic about the future. I did make a decision that night. My decision was not to hang up the cleats and move on. It was to throw them away and buy me a new pair next season! If I didn’t try again next year, I couldn’t live with myself. Last year we lost in round one, this year we lost in the championship game. What will next year hold? I’m choosing to be optimistic and I’m playing for the Stampede again next year and I hope you guys do too. We played better this year as a team, than we did last year and I’m not making predictions for next year, but… You fill in the blanks.
Thank you for all of your work and dedication to the team. It is appreciated more than you know! I understand it was a time-consuming season, but look how far we’ve come and look at what we’ve accomplished in only two seasons! I wish you guy a great summer and I hope you can all be part of the Southwest Stampede’s 2009 team! God bless you and your families! - #51

Week 13: Stampede 23 Hitmen 11
Playoffs Round 2
Your boys from the Southwest have done it again! In a 23-13 victory over the Hitmen, they now advance to the 2008 AZFL Championship game!
Inside the locker room there was an unseen energy and a completely different atmosphere. As I shook the right hand of every man in that locker room, I looked into their eyes. Nothing was said, just a simple nod. The nod signified that it would be pure business that night. It was an unspoken agreement amongst all of us, to give everything that we had and then some. After the pep-talk and prayer, we took the field and left it all out there and won.
Offensively, the running game was on fire. The first meeting between these two teams, would have the Stampede running game completely shut down by an aggressive defensive line. This time, the tables were turned. A defensive line that dominated the previous meeting was completely overwhelmed by the speed and power of the offensive line. Rush after rush, we continued to gain yards. Our ground attack would wear the defense down and produce multiple running scores. The air attack was effective as well, but was almost unnecessary in the first half, due to the dominance up front. Multiple touchdown passes were called back due to penalties, but the offense would persevere and overcome them. I remember a touchdown being called back twice, but the offense would put it in a third time and it would count! Amazing job guys!
Defensively, the Stampede were not outstanding, but still good. The stupid penalties we talked about last week were still present and would allow the Hitmen crucial first downs that would allow them to score. Despite these small set-backs, they still held it together and managed to keep the Hitmen from making any late comeback in the game. Well done “D!”
Now, it's championship time team. We're playing the only team that has beaten us this year. You can say what you want, but a win is a win, no matter how it is gained. An opportunity has presented itself to you. It is an opportunity for a title, a ring, and an opportunity for revenge. The real question is, “How bad do you want it?”
Be sure to come out and support your Southwest Stampede as they play for the AZFL Championship this Saturday at Thunderbird High School! They will be taking on the only team to have beaten them this year, the Chandler Cowboys. Kickoff is set for 6:30 pm, so don't be late! This will be one game you do not want to miss!
Okay, I understand that I've missed a few guys on the Kudos list this year and I don't realize it until films, so I'm going to give it my best to get everyone.
Kudos:
Neal Lake #55: For destroying their offensive line on almost every play (QB was scared of you)!
Sam Lance #6: For doing an excellent job at special teams this week and especially last week (We appreciate you effort)!
O'Line: For dominating the Hitmen defensive line all night (and not getting any personal fouls)!
Josh Head #1: For some sick hits on the Hitmen's receivers!
EJ #8: For another multiple-touchdown game (It's the shoes)!
Chris Delgudice #49: For not losing your temper (thank the Lord)!
Southwest Stampede: For keeping your composure despite being tempted many times!
*For all of you that I missed in the Kudos section this week, I will be sure to give you a hug at films Tuesday night.
Closing Thoughs…
Marty somehow managed to find mud again (In the desert).
Louie didn't jump off sides once (get ready, because the Lord is coming).
Gentry takes a beating and keeps on going.
Jack in the Box 30 minutes before a game is not recommended, but Chaca seems to disagree.
Rawle can dance better than anyone to “booty music.”
Jared is the only player that I know of who has thrown, caught, or kicked for points.
Our stands were PACKED on Saturday night!
“For God so loved the world, that He gave His only begotten Son, that whosoever believeth in Him, shall not perish, but have everlasting life.” -John 3:16 Jesus is Lord.
Week 12: Stampede 49 Cavaliers 6
Playoffs Round 1
Losing in round one last year left a sour taste in the mouths of the Stampede. This year upon returning to the playoffs, they had one thing in mind, making a statement. In a 49-6 victory against the Cavaliers of Cochise County, that is exactly what they did.
Okay, the offense scored pretty much at will in this game. They ran and threw the ball effectively and made the Cavaliers defense seem non-existent at times. The offensive line must have read Standing Pat last week, because I'm pretty sure there was a pocket for Gene all day on Saturday. Sure he got sacked off of blitzes, but that's something that's bound to happen. After huddle, the offense would run up to the line as if they were anxious for the next play. There was a hunger to score from the offense, a hunger that seemed to be absent for the past few weeks. Nice performance offense.
I can't tell you enough, that this defense is THE best defense in the AZFL. It is the best defense in the playoffs and that's by a long shot! Every play seemed to have at least one guy in blue getting laid out. On a punt return, I remember seeing at least 4 guys in blue, still on the ground, after the play was over! Every single guy on our defense wanted to make a tackle and so you'd see dog-piles on almost every running, or passing play! I know you were all upset, that they scored on you, but we all agreed, that it was coach E's fault (sorry coach, it's a democracy). I can't say enough about defensive captain, Marty “Mighty Mouse” Monroy. Mighty Mouse was in on almost every tackle in this game. Running backs and receivers couldn't get away, even if the play was on the opposite side of the field! Saturday's performance has proven to me, that this defense is in love with hitting! Very good job guys.
Okay, the Stampede win big last week, but there were some things that concerned me. Number one is TURNOVERS. I stopped counting after the third turnover and we hadn't made it past the first quarter yet! If you give a team like the Hitmen, that many opportunities, they will score. Number two is STUPID PENALTIES. Martell has had two returns (maybe more) called back due to stupid penalties! If the guy in front of you has no opportunity to make the play, for Pete's sake, leave him alone. Stupid penalties give the opposing team unnecessary opportunities and yards. We all know that we will not be given anything next week, so let's plan ahead and focus on just playing the game. Complaining to a referee will only help the opposing team get an extra 15 yards on us. Never in the history of football, has a play been reversed, because of someone's complaining and sorry guys, but there is NO instant replay. Now it's business. Get your mind right, get your butt to films, get your butt to practice, and be ready for an all out war on Saturday. Here is my question to you Stampede: “How bad do you want that ring?”
Be sure to catch the semi-final action of the AZFL as the Southwest Stampede take on the Flagstaff Hitmen! Kickoff is at 6:30 pm this Saturday, at Thunderbird High School (NEC of 19 th Ave & Thunderbird Rd). Come out and support your Stampede as they try and make it to their first championship game! God bless!
Kudos:
Mighty Mouse #21: For making countless tackles and for being the only person on the field who found mud!
O'Line: For making a pocket for Gene and for allowing the backs to run all over the Cav's!
Jared Schmiege #16: For making his millionth touchdown catch!
Craig “W” Brown: For a beautiful smile (I'll expect payment soon)!
Kyle Kennedy #88: For a touchdown catch, but more importantly the dance that followed!
The Southwest Stampede: For making it to practice last week!
“Not by might nor by power, but by My Spirit,' says the Lord Almighty.” Zechariah 4:6
Week 11: Stampede 14 Raiders 7 **March Madness Is Now Over**
The final game of the regular season is over! The Stampede keep the win streak alive going into the playoffs and win the Sonoran Division for the second year in a row!
The offense would struggle with fumbles all day against the Raiders. One early fumble in the end zone would give the Raider's a 7-0 advantage in the first quarter. The passing game was almost non-existent until Magic-Man connected with EJ on a touchdown pass, in the second quarter, to tie it up. It would be 7-7 until the second half, when the Stampede would bring out a devastating running game that the Raiders were unable to stop. Multiple run plays in a row would tire the defense and allow the Stampede to run it all the way into the Promised Land and go ahead 14-7.
Defensively, the Stampede were ruthless, as always. Our defensive line would annihilate the Raider's o'line all game. Constant pressure on the QB would put a damper on any kind of passing game the Raiders would hope for. The running game was completely shut down and the only major yards gained on these boys, was due to penalties. One penalty would see veteran defensive end, Neil “Meatloaf” Lake, get ejected for reasons yet to be determined. A field goal block returned for TD would be called back due to a penalty as well. Despite these set-backs, they boys were able to hold it together and hold it down. This defense, in my opinion, is the best defense in the AZFL this year. As a matter of fact, that's probably the opinion of a lot of people. Great performance as usual, guys!
We closed the season out with a win, clinch the Sonoran Division for the second year in a row, and finish with an impressive 9-1 record! This Saturday will match your Southwest Stampede against the Cavaliers from down South! The Cav's will have a full roster and are hoping to spoil the Stampede's hopes for a title. The problem is that when the Stampede Train is rolling, it's very hard to stop! Kickoff time is set for 2pm at Thunderbird High , so don't miss out!
Kudos:
EJ ”Finesse” #24: For scoring all of our touchdowns (We'll dismiss the fumble)!
Josh Head #1: For punishing hits, including a game-saving hit in the 4 th quarter (Ouch)!
Louie Cadriel #51: For jumping offsides only once (due to his quickness) and looking tight.
Aaron Gentry #4 ½: For shutting down their primary receiver and almost looking as tight as Louie.
Chris Delgudice #49: For being same o'l, easy on the eyes Chris (2 nd in tackles too).
Daniel Cabrerra #2: For channeling rage towards Craig “W” Valentine into a great 2 nd half!
Chaca “Kahn” Rojo #34: For that darn swim move of yours (Ruthless)!
Coach Phil: For getting chucked out of the game (dude walked across the field and put it down)!
“But he was pierced for our transgressions, he was crushed for our iniquities; the punishment that brought us peace was upon him, and by his wounds we are healed. We all, like sheep, have gone astray, each of us has turned to his own way; and the LORD has laid on him the iniquity of us all.”- Isaiah 53:5-6

Week 10: Stampede 26 Demons 0 ** Happy Resurrection Day! **
The Demons have been rebuked and the Stampede train keeps on rolling! Offense, defense, and special teams, all come through in a big way and give the Stampede their 8 th victory!
“Today seems like a sluggish day for me.” Those were the words out of Magic-Man's Gene's mouth. He only threw for two touchdowns in his “sluggish” performance. I believe it was Magic-Man being his usual, humble self. In the first half, the running game struggled, but after the linemen all took a whiff of some smelling salt, it came to live in the second half! The ground pound and air attack were on fire for the Boys of the Southwest and dominated the game clock the entire game. Great performance!
The defense played outstanding, producing yet another shutout! I'd like to make a special note on Saturday's defensive game: Chris Delgudice is not only second on the team in tackles, but an all around swell guy, who the Stampede wish would attend after game parties , more often. Not only is he a tremendous run stopping tackle, but this mammoth of a man is also easy on the eyes (I can say that because I'm secure in my sexuality). Defense, you shut down the run and stopped one of the best tight end's in the league! You all should be proud of your performance last week, because the rest of us are!
In a nutshell, I've played with the Stampede since they started last year and I must say that this team today is much more improved than last year. We are stronger, faster, more unified, and much more win-hungry. I am proud to be a member of this team. Be sure to catch all the action, as the Stampede train rolls into Raider town next week! Kickoff is at 11:30 am and is at Thunderbird High. Come out and support the Stampede as they try and silence the Raiders of Phoenix. This game has been anticipated all season long by both teams and will be one you don't want to miss!
Kudos:
Jared Schmiege #16: For another spectacular performance (Dude is on fire)!
Gene “Magic-Man” #5: For a tremendous, “sluggish” performance (Oh please)!
Martell Hayes #7: For another kick-off returned for touchdown (Must be the shoes)!
O'Line #15, 51, 62, 90, 99: For giving Gene all 13 seconds he needs to make a decision and for giving the running backs holes big enough to park your car in (And we're good-looking)!
D'Line: #55, 34, 49, 33: For stopping the rush and constant QB pressure (Greedy, baby)!
“May the Lord, the God of your fathers, increase you a thousand times and bless you as He has promised! - Deuteronomy 1:11
Week 9: Stampede 20 Punishers 18
In what is going to go down as the most dramatic finish in AZFL history, the Southwest Stampede defeat the Peoria Punishers and move up to 2 nd place in the power rankings!
“Ball on the thirty, with just six seconds left to play and the Punishers lead 18-14. Gene takes the snap, rolls right, releases the ball, and it is incomplete! Wait, there's a flag on the field! It's roughing the passer against the Punishers and that will move the Stampede up 15 yards and stop the clock with only 0.2 seconds left! This will be their last chance and everyone is on their feet for this one. Gene takes the snap, he looking, he has plenty of time, he releases it up the middle and……… It's caught for a touchdown!!!! Stampede win!! Stampede win!!!
Peoria's defense was very affective at stopping the rush, so the Stampede had to stick to their air attack and it paid off. Defensively, Peoria is big and strong, but that combination always comes at a price. They were unable to keep up with the speed of the Stampede receivers and that would prove to be their downfall. When you have a quarterback with experience and skill, then you give him the time he needs, he will connect with anyone on the field. The offense was able to score off of touchdown passes, by Magic-Man Gene, to THREE different receivers! When you're able to connect with that many players for TD's, it can be difficult for any defense to stop. In usual fashion, the offense would drive down the field 90 yards, and then score in the final seconds to win the game! Great teamwork Stampede!
The Stampede defense was able to slow down Peoria's dangerous running game, but costly and questionable penalties would give Peoria their biggest gains and give them golden opportunities to score. Stampede defender, Martell Hayes, would run an interception all the way for a TD, but it would get called back due to a roughing the passer call. This wasn't the only score for the team that was called back. But, the defense would never quit and they would punish the Peoria offense the entire game, even with three starters out! Way to stay resilient boys!
An action had to be taken this week. It was an action that many teams in any kind of sport have difficulty doing. That action was called teamwork. Just because you wear the same jerseys, doesn't mean you can play as a team. The Stampede united this Saturday and brought an unstoppable intensity to this game. It was contagious not only to players, but to coaches as well. Everyone was on the same page this game. When there was 2 minutes left, with the ball on the Stampede 10, and only 1 timeout remaining, there was nothing but positivity in the attitudes and voices of the entire team. That is called unity.
Be sure to come support your Stampede as they try and rebuke the Tucson Demons this Saturday at Thunderbird High School! Tucson is a dangerous team, who likes to hit, so this will be an exciting game that you won't wanna miss! Kick-off is at 2 pm, so don't be late!
Kudos:
Gene Garcia #5: For 3 touchdown passes to 3 different receivers, including the game-winning TD (That ball was in the air for hours)!
Stampede Defense: For swarming to the ball like linemen do, to a buffet!
“A fool gives full vent to his anger, but a wise man keeps himself under control.”
- Proverbs 29:11
Week 8: Stampede 13 Hitmen 9
When momentum is against you, weather is against you, time is against you, and the score is against you, what do you do? You bear down and fight until they are all on your side. The Stampede win on their final drive of the game against the Hitmen of Flagstaff.
The Stampede passing attack struggled at first, due to strong gusts of wind, so the running game was used to drive down the field on the first series of play. After making some adjustments to accommodate for the wind, the Stampede were able to score right before the end of the half, off of a touchdown pass by Gene “Magic-Man” Garcia. Late in the fourth quarter, the Stampede would find themselves down, 9 to 6. On the final drive, “Magic-Man” would connect with Stampede running back, Aaron Gentry who would produce an amazing run after catch for the winning touchdown! Despite the wind, snow, and the altitude, the boys from the Southwest were able to unite and bring home another victory. Way to stay resilient team!
At first, the defense would struggle and allow the Hitmen to score 9 points and head into the fourth quarter with a three point lead. Usually, when a defense allows only 9 points in a game, the team celebrates, but this is not your typical defense. This is the greediest defense in the AZFL league and they are only satisfied if there is a zero on the opponent's scoreboard. On the final drive of the game, the Stampede defense would shut down the Hitmen's last ditch efforts to score. A late interception by cornerback, Martell Hayes, would seal the deal for the Stampede and improve them to 6 wins. Way to bear down defense!
In a nutshell, the Stampede struggled with something they have been great with all year, team unity. In order to win a championship, you need eleven guys who have each other's back and are all on the same page. Remember, players don't win championships, teams do. Unity will be the deciding factor this Saturday against the Punishers. Kickoff is set for 9 am at Thunderbird High School! Don't miss out on the dogfight of the year!
Kudos:
#4 Aaron Gentry: For an amazing run after catch that turned the tide and won the game for the Stampede. King Kong comes through again!
#21 Arturo Monroy: For a great game at middle linebacker and for showing great leadership on and off the field. Thanks Marty!
Week 7: Stampede 28 Predators 6
A rough start doesn't always end in a rough finish and the Stampede proved that, by defeating the Tempe Predators in week 7, of AZFL action.
For the first three quarters, the offense couldn't produce any kind of yardage through the air, or on the ground, resulting in a continuous series of three and outs. At first, it seemed as if the Stampede were not in the game mentally. Committing penalties on crucial plays and allowing the Predator defense to apply pressure on Stampede QB, Gene Garcia, would keep the offense demoralized. Finally, in the fourth quarter, the offense came to life and would go on to score three consecutive touchdowns. This late performance would re-charge the entire team and bring back the intensity that was lacking in the first three quarters of play. Like they say, “Better late than never.” Way to stick in there offense!
The main key to this week's victory was a solid defense. The first half points came off of a blocked punt, returned for touchdown by the Stampede defense on the first series of play. Despite being on the field the majority of the first half, the defense was still swarming to the ball, shutting down the Predators running game. The Predators however, were still able to put six points on the board, due to a questionable pass interference penalty against the Stampede. Other than that, the defense was greedy and ruthless as ever. Multiple interceptions and a block field goal, returned for 2 point conversion would keep the Stampede train rolling. Way to play “ironman” football guys!
Preparation is everything and it would seem as if the Stampede were not themselves this weekend. A half-paced practice, costly penalties, bickering and arguing amongst themselves would prove to be costly during the first half. After a great pep-talk during half time, the Stampede would all unify and go on to beat the Predators. Games like this can be a humbling experience and can show you, that anything can happen on any given Saturday. Be sure to come out and support your Southwest Stampede this Saturday, as they take on the third place Hitmen of Flagstaff! Kick-off is at 2pm, so don't miss out the battle for third place!
Kudos:
Stampede Defense: for playing almost the entire first and still managing to shut down the Predators offensive attack.
Gene Garcia: for throwing for two touchdowns, both to Jared Schmiege in the second half, despite taking a beating from the Predators defense.
But Jesus looked at them and said, “With men this is impossible, but with God, all things are possible.” -Matthew 19:26
Week 6: Stampede 41 Gladiators 6
The Stampede needed to make a statement against the Scottsdale Gladiators this weekend and is exactly what they did. Scoring 41 points on a rock solid defense is a major accomplishment for this young team.
Offensively, the Stampede executed their plays almost perfectly. Two touchdowns were scored off of passes thrown by Gene Garcia, including one to star receiver, Jared Schmiege. The key factor for the offense this week however, was the Stampede ground attack. Whether it was a run left, right, or middle, the Stampede ground attack was unstoppable. In addition to a solid line, having more depth at running back is what makes this possible.
Defensively, the Stampede seemed greedier than ever scoring two touchdowns and holding the Gladiators to only 6 points. Their first score came off of a blocked field goal returned for a touchdown by safety, Josh Head, followed by an amazing interception returned by cornerback Martell Hayes. This is only a small portion of the many defensive highlights that were produced this week. Great Job boys!
It would seem as if a new standard has been set for this team. A high-scoring offense combined with a greedy and improved defense makes the Southwest Stampede true contenders for the AZFL Championship! Come support you Southwest Stampede as they take on the Tempe Predators this Saturday at Thunderbird High School! Kick off will be at 11:30 am so don't miss out!
Kudos:
Jared Schmiege#16: For sure hands and yet another touchdown catch!
Daniel Cabrerra #2: For 2 crucial interceptions (1 almost returned for a TD).
“No weapon formed against you shall prosper and any tongue that rises against you, you shall condemn.” Isaiah 54:17 God Bless!
Week 5: Stampede 32 Cowboys 39
In what was the biggest dogfight that the AZFL has produced thus far this year, the Stampede fall short of victory to the Cowboys of Chandler. Offensively, the Stampede ran, threw and scored almost at will. Defensively, the Stampede were able to shut down the Cowboys running game and short pass completely. The Cowboys however, were able to capitalize on the Stampede's inability to cover the deep pass. This would prove to be the only weapon that the Cowboys would have against the Stampede and the only weapon they would need to win. If there were such a thing as a good loss, this would be it. Only one play proved to be effective against the Stampede defense. This one play would expose a weakness in the defense; a weakness which can be overcome. Other than that, everything else went well. The team played with an amazing intensity and unity like never before. The rest of the season will be very interesting to see after Saturday's performance from the Southwest Stampede.
Kudos:
Southwest Stampede Offense: For a relentless attack that produced 32 points against a good defense. Southwest Stampede: For keeping composure and playing football with class. “Humility and fear of the Lord, bring wealth and honor in life” -Proverbs 22:4
*Special Note:
The Southwest Stampede asks you to keep offensive tackle, Mike Kaiser in your prayers. Mike was injured on Saturday's game and was hospitalized for 4 broken ribs and a collapsed lung. Despite the injury, he is in good spirits and is looking forward to a full recovery. God Bless.
Come out and support your Southwest Stampede as they take on the Cowboys from Chandler, this Saturday, Feb. 16th, at Thunderbird High School, with a kick-off at 4:30 pm. Be ready for a high-scoring, fast-paced, football game, with plenty of big hits! Thank you for your support and God bless! Isaiah 54:17”No weapon formed against me shall prosper and every tongue that rises against me, I shall condemn."
Week 4: Stampede 20 Cavaliers 0
The Stampede are now 3-0 for the season! The game was scoreless, until the second quarter when an interception was returned for a touchdown by the Stampede defense, giving them a 7-0 lead going into the half. The offensive hammer finally struck in the second half with two touchdowns solidifying a victory for the Stampede and improving their record to 3-0!
Defensively, they had a great game, shutting out the Cavaliers offense, which is no easy task. Offensively however, they struggled to produce points until the fourth quarter. To win a game when you play well is to be expected, but to win a game when you don't is almost unheard of. The Stampede did not play their best football, but still managed a win against a good football team. This goes to show how much depth and desire this team has to win.
Kudos:
Defensive back, Bryant Martinez #17: For an interception returned for a touchdown and a huge momentum boost for the team!
Stampede defense: For producing another shutout against a good team!
Running Back, Aaron Gentry #4: For sure hands on a touchdown catch and a “never say die” attitude, which was contagious in the 4 th quarter!
*Be sure to come out and support your Southwest Stampede (3-0) as they face the Chandler Cowboys (3-0) this Saturday, February 16 th , at 4:30pm! Game will be held at Thunderbird H.S. (NEC of 19 th Ave. & Thunderbird Rd.). This is the battle of the unbeaten! Don't miss out!
